CHURCHWARDEN Pipes made of briar

A churchwarden pipe is a tobacco pipe with a long stem. The stem of the churchwarden pipe is normally about 20 cm.

Churchwardens pipes were reputedly named after churchwardens who used to put their pipes' long stem out of the church windows so they could smoke in church.

Churchwarden pipes take their origin in Ottoman Empire and were very popular in Easten Europe in the 17th century.These pipes were an emblem of the "Hussars" cavarly troops (more about the HUSSAR Pipe here).

Due to the long stem Churchwardens pipes produce a cooler smoke. These pipe have further benefit of keeping the usersface away from the heat and smoke produced by combustion in the bowl. (That is why the common name of Churchwardens pipes in Germany is "reading pipe" : the longer stem allowed an unimpeded view of the book).
